So happy to be giving my favourite album of 2012 a long-overdue European release in April!
Check out this track from Hop Along. More news, pre-order and tour dates to come soon…
Nothing makes a day of delirium and loathing better than a label announcing a new signing, and this time it’s coming from one of my all-time favourites. Big Scary Monsters have announced that they’ll be releasing the debut full-length from the Philly-based Hop Along, whose debut album Get Disowned became a late night summer record for many when it first dropped last year for all the right reasons.
Having already toured with the almighty Joyce Manor and taking their Philadelphia home into consideration, Hop Along shouldn’t be a strange name to many of you. But for the uninformed, Get Disowned is a raw and rather down-to-earth affair that falls somewhere on the scale between Joyce Manor themselves, P.S. Eliot (or perhaps even Swearin’) and Lemuria. The record was also produced by Algernon Cadwallader man Joe Reinhart, so that name alone should be enough for you to jump head-first into this album with your eyes closed.
“Stanger in India
I’m gonna be creepin’ on you so hard
You’re seducin’ Tibetan pop stars and
Wreckin’ motor-cars”
Fronted by the enigmatic Francis Quinlan, the project at first started as her own solo project titled Hop Along, Queen Ansleis which dates back as far as 2005. Dominic Angelella of Dragonzord and Mark Quinlan of the fantastic Netherfriends now fill out the three-piece, and the result is a charming combination of sincere melodies and a reinforced sense of depth to Quinlan’s already emotionally deep songs. Blending an incredible amount of styles ranging from folk to punk to blues and even psychedelica and rockabilly, there’s something on Get Disowned for everyone to tuck into.
“Two days gone. Somebody checked in on you.
That unsettling smell got into all the tenants’ rooms.
You were found sitting up, all alone in the bathtub, your clothes dry.
But your brother doesn’t wanna know and nobody told your caseworker you died.”
You can download ‘Young and Happy!’ from Big Scary Monsters here, and the label promises that us UK folk can look forward to some tour dates and a physical release in April of this year.
